About Niyodogawa

Nestled in the mountains of Kochi Prefecture, Niyodogawa Town (pop. 4,465) is a charming ensemble of riverside communities and hamlets perched along the mountainsides. The town boasts a reputation for having exceptionally pure river water, affectionately referred to as “Niyodo Blue” for its captivating color.

Historically, the region was a producer of raw materials for Washi paper. While the paper industry has given way to timber and tea cultivation in modern times, Niyodogawa Town, like many rural areas in Japan, grapples with a declining population and a prevalence of vacant homes. Despite the ebb of its heyday, the community remains steadfast in its pride for its heritage, extending a warm and welcoming embrace to all who visit its serene surroundings.
