What We Do

At Kabu Homestead, we're just beginning our journey, focusing our initial efforts on two key areas: our regenerative community garden and making Johnson-Su bioreactors. We prioritize building soil health by harnessing the power of beneficial microbes. Soil teeming with life produces food full of vitality.

Discover the many ways we're working to build a more resilient and vibrant future.

Building Self-Sufficiency

We believe that rural communities are more resilient when they can grow their own local food and generate their own electricity.

  • Community Garden: Our community garden is a space to grow nutrient-rich food and learn about regenerative gardening practices.

  • Bioreactor Workshops: We teach individuals how to build and use bioreactors to create biologically-active compost and enhance soil health.

  • Seed Saving: We save seeds from plants naturally adapted to our environment.

Preserving Local Traditions

We preserve traditions to strengthen our connection to our ancestors and our cultural identity.

  • Food Preservation Methods: We practice traditional methods of food preservation, ensuring that the bounty of each season can be enjoyed year-round.

  • Preparing Local Dishes: We celebrate our local culinary heritage by preparing and sharing traditional dishes, using time-honored recipes and locally sourced ingredients.

  • Sumi Charcoal Making: We plan to restore a sumi kiln and make charcoal for cooking.

Restoring Ecosystems

We're committed to restoring and revitalizing the natural world, creating thriving habitats for all creatures.

  • Insect Habitats: We reclaim abandoned fields, regenerating the soil and planting vibrant wildflower meadows. This creates a haven for pollinators like bees and butterflies, as well as other beneficial insects, strengthening the food chain and fostering a thriving ecosystem.

Weaving Community

We believe that strong communities are woven together through shared experiences, collaborative projects, and a deep connection to the land.

  • Community Composting: Our community composting program transforms food waste into a valuable resource, enriching our soil and reducing our environmental impact.

  • Barefoot Walking Path: Grounding, or earthing, is the simple practice of walking barefoot on the earth to connect with its natural energy, improving well-being.

  • Baking Club: We plan to get together and try new recipes such as sourdough bread and peach cobbler.

Future Initiatives

We have big plans for the future:

  • Food Forest: We're creating a thriving food forest, providing a sustainable source of fresh produce and enriching our local ecosystem.

  • Mushroom Growing: We're exploring the fascinating world of mushroom cultivation.

  • Chicken Tractor: We're bringing a mobile chicken tractor to our community, providing fresh eggs and sustainable fertilizer.

  • Beekeeping: We're establishing beehives to support pollinators and produce delicious honey.

  • Solar Sharing: We're exploring solar energy options to empower our community and reduce our environmental impact.

  • Educational Programs: We're offering workshops, classes, and events to share our knowledge and inspire others to get involved.

  • Composting Toilet: We're exploring eco-friendly sanitation solutions, including composting toilets, to conserve water and create valuable compost.

  • Washi Paper Making: We're learning about the traditional method of growing the plants that make washi paper.

  • Heritage Skills: We seek to build skills like basketweaving, crafting fabric, making soap, pottery, metal working and more.

Stay tuned for updates as we bring these projects to life!

Our Impact

Our Outcomes:

Cultivating Change

At Kabu Homestead, our activities are driven by clear outcomes. We aim to improve soil health and demonstrate the power of biologically active soil to grow high quality fruits and vegetables. We also strive to build local self-sufficiency by increasing the amount of food grown within our community.

Our Vision:

A Regenerative Garden Hub

The success of our garden will enable us to develop a garden hub—a center for education, knowledge sharing, data collection, and seed exchange. Our ultimate goal is to empower more people to start their own regenerative gardens, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
